Installing RC-Reporter

RC-Reporter is normally installed on the same host computer as RC-Archive, but can also be installed on its own or in combination with other Reliable Controls software.

Ensure that the host computer meets the recommended system requirements before proceeding with the installation.

Download the installation program from www.reliablecontrols.com. Two installation programs are available: one without Microsoft SQL Server and the other one with Microsoft SQL Server. If you have an instance of SQL Server already installed, download the installation program that does not includes SQL Server.

Use the following steps to install RC-Reporter:

  1. In the RC-Reporter - InstallShield Wizard click Next to proceed or click Cancel to cancel the installation.
  2. Close all Windows applications currently running on your computer.
  3. Double-click the RC-Reporter installation file to begin the installation process. The process checks that IIS is set up, and determines if SQL Server Express is installed. If not, the installation process prompts you for confirmation to install these required prerequisites. You need to use the installation program that includes Microsoft SQL Server to install SQL Server Express, if it is required.
  4. Read and accept the license agreement (Print if required) and then click Next.
  5. On the Destination Folder page, click Next to accept the default installation location for RC‑Reporter, or click Change.
  6. Select Default Settings to install all program features and to designate the destination folder.

    — or —

Select Custom to specify additional information to uniquely identify a web domain for RC‑Reporter:

    • Web Application Port — Enter the TCP port that RC-Reporter will use. By default, the port is 8080. The RC-Reporter installer automatically creates a Windows Firewall exception for this port.

IP Address — Enter the IP address at which RC-Reporter will be available. Enter an asterisk (*) to bind the web application to all available addresses.

Host Header Name (Optional) — Enter a name that uniquely identifies the site at the IP address.

    • Query Engine Port — Specifies that port 65080 (the default) is used by the query engine. If this port is already used by another application, you can specify the port that the Query Engine should use. Do not specify port 65081 because it is the default port used by the PDF Generation Engine.
    • PDFService Port — Specifies that port 65081 (the default) is used by the PDF Generation Engine. If this port is already used by another application, you can specify the port that the PDF Generation Engine should use.
    • Proxy Settings — When RC-Reporter runs behind a proxy, select the option RC-Reporter will use a Reverse Proxy to configure cross-site forgery protection (CSRF). The proxy is required to forward X-Forwarded-Host and X-Forwarded-Proto headers. Do not select this option if RC‑Reporter does not run behind a proxy.
  7. Click Next.
  8. On the Database Server page, modify or maintain the following default settings:
    • Database server — Enter the path to a SQL Server instance, or click Browse to view SQL Servers instances available on the network.
    • Connect using — Enter a login ID and password to authenticate directly with a target SQL Server instance.

The sa login ID is specified by default for SQL Server authentication. Windows authentication is not supported.

      Note:

The RC-Reporter installation process uses the SQL Server System Administrator (sa) account by default on the Database Server page. Since the sa account has the highest authority level for the SQL Server, your IT organization may require that a different account be used.

You can create a custom login ID with public and sysadmin authority, and use it to install RC-Reporter. After RC-Reporter is installed, the authority level assigned to the custom login ID needs to be reduced to a level that permits RC-Reporter to function—the sysadmin authority needs to be revoked and replaced by the db_owner authority.

For instructions about creating and using a custom login ID to install RC-Reporter, and in reducing the authority level for the custom login ID, click the link in the right pane for Creating and using a custom login ID.

    • Name of database catalog — Enter the name of the database to be used by RC-Reporter. If the RC-Reporter database doesn't currently exist, then the installer will create the database. If you previously uninstalled RC-Reporter but chose to keep the database, it will be used.

This option specifies the name of the database that stores RC-Reporter information. It does not refer to the name of the RC-Archive database.

  9. Click Next.
  10. On the Administrator Information page, enter the following information:
    • Email — Enter an email address for the administrator's account.
    • Password — Enter a password for the administrator account.
    • Confirm Password — Confirm the password for the administrator account.

The default Administrator account is set to Admin. You can enter Admin as the user name rather than the full email address on the Log On page.

  11. Click Install on the RC-Reporter - InstallShield Wizard page to begin the RC-Reporter installation.

If you do not have a license for RC-Reporter, a message indicates that the software will be installed with a Trial license.
